'music for painting' is an album of hypnagogic electronica intended for passive listening. It is designed to inspire creative activity through the cultivation of an ambient, atmospheric mood. It was produced in 和光市 throughout 2020-2022.

"This dewdrop world is a dewdrop world. And yet... And yet..."

I was fortunate to enter Japan in March 2020 on the final flight out of Australia before Japan enacted extended border closures to foreign business and recreational travellers. The shit was hitting the fan in Oz with supply chain issues causing mayhem, politicians passing the buck, and medical experts frantically debating the most pragmatic response to the impending chaos.

The mood in Japan was unusually calm. Travellers from blacklisted countries were separated from the pack and directed to some unknown corner of Narita Airport but Australian and Japanese residents were free to enter with little more than a temperature check and a courteous bow. This sense of calm would persist as the borders closed and the hopes of seeing friends and family faded into a featureless horizon. Someday but not now. It was going to be quite unlike the experience I envisioned when accepting this job.

The uncertainty expressed itself in music. Most of my equipment was stuck in Australia so a new approach was required to achieve an old sound. A laptop instead of a PC. Headphones instead of monitors. More hardware. Extended recording sessions. Fewer edits. Inspiration was found in the sound of 90s ambient, acid, IDM, and electro. Drexciya, The Primitive Painter, Dubtribe Sound System, Legowelt, The Railway Raver, Toshifumi Hinata, Unit Moebius, Artificial Intelligence, The Other People Place, Andrew Weatherall, AFX, Boards of Canada.
